Mentoring
Programs
Community-based
serves youth ages 6-18 primarily from single-parent families.
The volunteer and "Little" usually participate in social
activities such as going to a movie, the park, a ball game, bowling,
or the mall. Paul
and Brandon make a good example of the community-based program.
School-based
supports children who are selected by school personnel. Volunteers
meet with their "Little" at school during lunch once
a week during the school year. Activities include arts and crafts,
reading, games, homework, playing, or just talking. The school-based
program is actively recruiting mentors to volunteer in the Edmonds
and Everett School Districts.
Benefit
Mentoring serves to guide, lead, help, encourage, and support
a child. Much research has already been conducted to gauge the
benefit of children who have a mentor, and those who are waiting
to be matched. Snohomish County Littles say mentoring helps:
- 76% to feel more
confident
- 60% to have a sense
of the future
- 75% to improve
academic performance
- 100% to show trust
in others
Children with a mentor
are much less likely to use drugs or alcohol, deal with teenage
pregnancy, and much more likely to attend school and excel there-
who wouldn't with someone to help guide, help and encourage?
