Programs for mentoring

Cost = $0.00

Benefit
Mentoring serves to guide, lead, help, encourage, and support a child. Much research has already been conducted to gauge the benefit of children who have a mentor, and those who are waiting to be matched. Snohomish County Littles say mentoring helps:

  • 76% to feel more confident
  • 60% to have a sense of the future
  • 75% to improve academic performance
  • 100% to show trust in others

Children with a mentor are much less likely to use drugs or alcohol, deal with teenage pregnancy, and much more likely to attend school and excel there- who wouldn't with someone to help guide, help and encourage?

Program types:
The three mentoring programs essentially differ in time and committment:

  • Community-based mentoring program

  • School-based mentoring program

  • Site-based mentoring program

Community-based serves youth ages 6-18 primarily from single-parent families. The volunteer and "Little" usually participate in social activities such as going to a movie, the park, a ball game, bowling, or the mall. Paul and Brandon make a good example of the community-based program.

The following 2 programs run for only during the school year, and continue the following year.

School-based supports children who are selected by school personnel. Volunteers meet with their "Little" at school during lunch once a week during the school year. Activities include arts and crafts, reading, games, homework, playing, or just talking. Read about Greg and Steve's experience as a school-based match.

Site-based works in partnership with the YMCA and other agencies to offer a safe place for volunteers and their "Littles" to meet after school from 3-6 p.m. weekdays. Activities include recreation, arts and crafts, homework assistance, and games.
