Big Brothers on Ice, Making a difference in the lives of Kids
This year the Campaign is shaping up for a "hat trick". Look forward to three events, starting with the Big Brothers on Ice BBQ on May 17th. More soon to follow.
More
than 80% of children waiting for a Big are boys, but only three
out of every ten inquiries to volunteer come from men. Research
shows that having the positive influence of a Big Brother makes
a real difference in the life of a boy. "When a cause like
this comes out, you expect to feel good about what you are doing;
once you get in to it however, you realize that is you, yourself
who is most impacted." admits DLHC member Scott Moore. Many
men believe taking on a Little Brother is a huge time commitment-
it's not. It is as easy as having lunch, once a week. Yes,
that easy.
DLHC,
through the Big Brothers on Ice campaign, aim to provide a prevention
focused resource for boys who respond well with a male role model
to guide, cheer and coach them. DLHC is scoring a goal for matches
each match. "We're totally psyched about this campaign. We
all love to play…but now we are skating for a greater cause!"

DLHC, comprised of 15 heroes from various sectors of our community share a love of hockey, of community, and the future we have in our youth.
The Need for Men:

Nothing can fill the emotional hole of being left without a father, who died four years ago of a heart attack. Mary Schatz-Grootveld, mother to Arick, says her youngest son's eyes have grown sadder and sadder each time Arick's brother Rein leaves with his Big Brother- he gets left behind. "Kenny," an 8 year old boy, is in the 2nd grade. Soon, his older brother will venture to college, leaving him at home with his mother and 16 yr old sister. Adopted at an early age from the foster care program, he has had both mother and father. Kenny's father was a caring and nurturing father, until he died more than 2 years ago...-> more
